Know Thy SEO Spider

NO I am not talking about the eight-legged hairy creatures of nightmares. These spiders are electronic, used by search engines, and if you ignore them they give you nightmares that will haunt you every waking moment

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is all about common sense; it doesn’t necessitate specific knowledge of algorithms, programming and classifications. All it requires is a basic understanding of how search engines spiders work. Taking care of the search engine spiders likes and dislikes can prove to be crucial for the health and success of your website.

The Spider at Work

They are called spiders because they crawl over the Web in search of content. Search engines gather data about a website by ’sending’ the spider or bots to ‘read’ the site and copy its content. This content is stored in the search engine’s database. As they copy and absorb content from one document, they create record links and send other bots to make copies of content on those linked documents this process goes on and on. As of now the major search engines have established databases that measure their size in the tens of billions using this process.

Spiders are designed to read site content like a human. It will start at the top left hand corner, reading line by line. In case of columns spiders will read the left hand column before moving to central and right hand column. It will read and record the whole site to the very last word.

Likes of the Spider

Provide clear paths for spiders to follow, put easy to follow text links directed to the most important pages in the site at the bottom of each document. The sitemap is the most important link in the site as it directs spiders through the website.

Provide as much relevant key word rich text as possible. Search engine spiders read the text that is on your Web site to decide if your site is relevant or not. If they do not find the keyword being searched they will simply ignore your site and move to the next site. Also make sure the text is relevant and makes sense.

Provide clear identification between areas that to be used and areas that are off limit to the spiders.

Provide clear titles; after the URL of a site, the first information a spider records is the title of the site. Titles should have the most important keyword targets.

Provide a well written Description Meta tag. Search engines use Description Meta tag to collect information on the topic or theme of the site.

Dislikes of the Spider

Avoid Very large volume in content. Spiders can only download a fraction of the Web pages within a given time frame, so if you have too much it might skip the most important parts.

Avoid dynamic page generation, spiders generally tend to avoid pages having any resources that have a “?” i.e. dynamic in nature. Stick to static generation spiders prefer them.

Avoid too many graphics. Spiders are not fond of graphics as they are not readable for them so keep it simple.

Avoid Key word misuse. Don’t just string a lot of keywords together, remember the spiders are very smart and they will ban you for spamming.

Do you know how to use the world’s most important search engine? You do? Are you sure about that?

You might be surprised to find out just what it can do. Take out irrelevant results to get just what you’re looking for. Find results for specific websites. Remember your bookmarks. Read on!

Exclude Google’s Irrelevant Results
Let’s say you’re looking for a recipe to prepare meatballs, but have a tomato intolerance. How do you find what you’re looking for?

1. You can put “meatball recipe” as your search keywords and plough through the results, wasting time with the ones that feature tomatoes. This will give you 56,000 results in Google.

2. Put “meatball recipe” -tomato instead, which will cut out all the more than 13,000 results not relevant to you.

It’s as simple as that. Put a minus sign immediately before the keyword you don’t want to have and the results you get will be exactly what you want.

Focus Your Google Search
You’re looking through a big website with lots of content and want to focus on some specific information. Let’s say you’re looking at the CNN site and want information on when it’s mentioned the word ‘copywriter’.

So you go to CNN, put ‘copywriter’ in its search box and click away. What do you get? You get a search that gives you every mention of the word you’re after on the Internet, not just from CNN. That’s no use at all.

Here’s what you do:

Simply enter site: cnn.com copywriter in Google’s search box and you’re there.

It’s that simple. site: & URL (don’t leave a space between the two) and your search keyword/keywords.

Google Bookmarks
When you’re away from home or the office and you want to check on some of your favourite websites - at an Internet cafe, say - it’s a real pain to have to either note them all down on paper or remember them in your head. What if you can’t remember the URLs? What do you do then?

I’m forever checking my work email to see what’s arriving and looking at my web stats to see how many visitors I’m getting. And I’m just the same whenever I’m away from home, too. I’m always heading down to Internet cafes to check on things. I admit it; I’m obsessed.

But I have no problems remembering which websites to look at. Why? Because Google Bookmarks make it easy for me.

If you have the Google Toolbar on your web browser, you’ll know how easy it is to zip to the sites you want to look at most often. But did you know that the bookmarks you have on the toolbar are also saved on a dedicated website? No? Well, they are.

Go to http://www.google.com/bookmarks/ and log in to your Google account.

And hey presto! They’re all there, waiting for you. It took me years to realise the site existed and I literally smacked my forehead when I thought of all the time I’d wasted miserably trying to remember website addresses and typing different combos of ‘.com’, ‘.net’ and ‘.co.uk’.

The next time you’re away from your regular computer and need to access the sites that are important to you, remember the time you read this article and mentally thank me!

Googlism
Here’s another time-saving tip that can give you the knowledge you need about something in a split second.

Imagine that you want to find out what people think about something. A person, maybe, or a bit of software. How do you do it? Short of trawling dozens of websites that come up when you enter a search engine request to see what they say, how can you get a super-quick idea of the zeitgeist of the thing you’re researching?

This is how: http://www.googlism.com/

Check it out. Once you get to the site, put in your search term, click ‘Googlism!’ and see what it gives you.

Word of warning: be prepared! Not every result you see will be necessarily what you are after. But it will capture the essential ’story’ - the way people view something. Here are a few of the results for the search term ‘Gordon Brown’ (the UK Prime Minister):

- Gordon brown is an enigma to his colleagues
- Gordon brown is worried that the ecb only needs to take action when inflation is too high
- Gordon brown is a high taxing chancellor
- Gordon brown is by far the most influential member of Britain’s labour government
- Gordon brown is preparing to throw his weight behind the campaign for British membership of the euro

Granted, what it gives you isn’t the most up-to-date of information, but hey, it’s a start. Why not give it a test run?

Daniel O`Connor is a leading freelance copywriter in the UK.

See his satisfaction-guaranteed website’s copywriter portfolio.

He’s worked for some of the biggest companies in the world - including NTT and Mitsubishi Electric, not to mention the 1998 Olympic Winter Games - as well as some of the smallest.

And he can do a job for you, too.

Daniel is supremely qualified at explaining complicated things in a simple way. There’s nothing you can throw at him that he won`t have dealt with before.

Because it’s all about one thing: the words. The right words for you and your business.

No more junk mail.
In my last article, I asked why people don’t sign up for free CD’s. I heard a lot of reasons, but one can be summed up in four words: no more junk mail. People are afraid that if they sign up for anything, their names will get sold and circulated and their mailboxes will fill up even more with time wasting, stupid and sometimes downright insulting e-mails.

I agree. There’s no room in your Million Dollar Desire Mailbox for junk mail. Junk mail has become the bane of many people’s existence. It was bad enough, when we received mailboxes full of paper circulars that we had no interest in. Now, digital circulars can be sent to us for free, and there’s no end and no limit to what can be sent. But things have changed in the last few years, and there are new rules to the game.

The CAN-SPAM act of 2003
The CAN-SPAM act of 2003 was implemented in 2004. CAN-SPAM stands for “controlling the assault of non-solicited pornography and marketing.” There are four main provisions in the act: false or misleading header information is banned, a deceptive subject line is prohibited, an opt out method must be provided, and commercial e-mail must be identified as an advertisement with sexually explicit material identified as such in the header. If you receive mail in any of these categories, click on the opt out or unsubscribe link. If there is no opt-out link, consider reporting the e-mailer to the FTC.

Don’t be afraid to unsubscribe
In the early days of the Internet, people who received junk mails were urged not to click on the unsubscribe or opt-out link, because this would alert them that they had found a valid e-mail address and they could then sell your address to others. Nowadays, however, no reputable internet marketer wants to send you spam. There are rules about not sending unwanted commercial e-mails to people and strict penalties for those who break them.

When you are sent a commercial e-mail that you don’t want, look for the opt-out link at the bottom of the e-mail and unsubscribe. If you still receive e-mails from this commercial entity after 10 days, you can report the marketer to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) by going to the FTC website at www.FTC.gov and filing a complaint form. It takes a little searching, but the form is there, so keep searching.

So, I told you all that to tell you this. Click on the link provided below, or go to my blog and click on the image of the CD in the top right column so you can get the free audio or CD. You will receive offers for other products from Lisa Diane, and if I find something of interest that I would want to be told about, I may bring it to your attention too. But your e-mail stops with us, and if you don’t want any further e-mails from either of us, just unsubscribe. Unsubscribe to all e-mailers whose communications you don’t want any more, and keep your mailbox open for the communications you do want.

Life’s too short to have to wade through spam, looking for your Million Dollar Desire.

John Donna is a recent newcomer to the e-zine scene. He is, at the moment, in professional transition, works with young adults and is very much into changing his life for the better.

The first question that arises in the minds of people when considering home insurance is how to get home insurance very easily. To get home coverage, the first vital step is to find a prospective insurer. For this, consumers need to shop around for them.

It is also beneficial to check over the online companies and their quotes and prices. However, avoid stressing more on low cost coverage. This is because a low cost coverage does not mean a good deal. The stability and service of a company is most important. Hence, ascertain the credit status of insurance companies. After short listing the best companies, collect their quotes.

Some homeowners include their land cost in their insurance coverage. This is the most common mistake among all homeowners who buy insurance. However, they have to avoid such practices. This is because, when theft, flood or earthquakes occur, the land should not suffer any permanent damage. This may cause a customer to pay larger premiums in tune with the land value in their home insurance coverage.

A Few Effective Ways to Get Home Insurance:

Anyone who shops for a home policy is concerned about how to get home coverage with the best features. First, consumers need to determine what is best for them, and then decide how to get such coverage at an affordable price. Below are a few guidelines on how to get home insurance coverage with little or no trouble.

Ask friends and relatives about their experiences with home firms. If they suggest some insurer or agent, note them down. However, do not simply go with suggestions. Try to get details about such agents and insurers.

Visit the State Department of Insurance and create a list of firms that have a rank of A or greater. Remember to collect quotes from these short listed companies.

Get online quotes from as many of these companies as you can, and compare their quotes. Choose the best five insurance companies among them.

After selecting five companies, try to find out their ratings from several independent sources. Use A.M. Best Company, Better Business Bureau and Phelps to ascertain their crediting status. These credit rating agencies will help to decide how solid each of the selected insurers is.

Do not go for any company that has a rating less than A. Such companies are not in any position to guarantee compensation, if an insured person makes a claim.

Conclusion:

Insurance buyers may seek help from different bureaus, which exist online as well as off-line, to select the best deal for their dream home. Another key factor is that deals have to be within an insurance buyer’s financial budget.

Consumers have the option to search for an optimal and affordable deal, from various companies that offer similar deals. Remember to hunt for discounts on any chosen policy.

The Internet is vast and there will be numerous results. However, consumers have to be very careful in finding a superior home insurance to protect their homes. The resources below can come in handy when looking for coverage.

Ian Wright wants everyone to be able to get the home insurance coverage that they need. So to help he has created pages on how to get: cheap home insurance quotes or visit: http://www.quick-online-insurance-quote.com/compare-home-insurance-quotes-online.html.

Good luck is something everyone wants and believes in. You can find many people out there who believe in good luck charms. Many people go looking in a patch of clover for that special four - leaf clover, but may not find it. However, mind you, these four leaf clovers are out there, and this is where these good luck charms prove to be lucky to you.

You could go looking for as many four-leaf clovers as possible and sell them as genuine good luck charms. To start with, you may find just a few good luck charms. However, in the end, you can start selling fresh, dried, and pressed good luck charms. You need not worry if you end up with a shortage of good luck charms. You could just take the names of your customers and their contact information, so that it is possible to contact them when you find more of the four leaf clover good luck charms.

There is no point selling these good luck charms at too high a rate, as you will not get that many buyers. Instead, price them rather reasonably, say about $50 per good luck charm and you are sure to find many buyers for your good luck charms. It would be better for you to have some proof or some stories of people who have experienced good luck after buying your good luck charm. Once potential buyers hear about such people, they will indeed be more interested in buying your good luck charm.

You can try to sell your good luck charms through the internet too. All that has to be done is create a website, with pictures of your good luck charms. You could also include some articles on the benefits of having a good luck charm on the site. On reading these articles, people will be more interested in buying good luck charms for themselves. If possible, collect some testimonials of people who have experienced good luck after buying your good luck charm.

You will then have to include contact information on the website that people can use to contact you and place an order for a four-leaf good luck clover. Of course, it is up to you to send the good luck charm and make sure that the good luck charm reaches the recipient intact and in good condition. If you need to pay for the shipping charges of a good luck charm, it will be necessary for you to include the amount you pay for the shipping in the cost of the good luck charm.

You could also set up a stall at a fair or in a shopping mall, where there will be the most people who are interested in buying good luck charms. You could have individual plastic boxes made for you to store the clovers in, sparing the clovers from being cut or spoiled. Once you manage to sell a few good luck charms, you will find that good luck is in your favor when more and more people turn up looking for good luck four leaf clovers to buy.

Last week we talked about the different types of links (no-follow, reciprocal, one-way links) and I listed a few ways of getting each type of link. Well this week I am going to go into more detail about where to get links and what to look for when starting a link-building campaign.

When building links through any medium, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure that you are not wasting your time on a particular site. First, make sure that anywhere you submit to does not use the “no-follow” attribute. Not very many places use this but if they do then you are wasting your time because your link on these types of websites will count for nothing. Another thing to look for is PageRank; the higher the PageRank of any given website the higher your link will be weighted by the search engines. They use the theory that if someone of high importance is linking to you, then you are probably of some importance yourself. However, don’t use PageRank as a decision maker alone because there are definitely some good websites with low PageRank and there are definitely some bad websites with high PageRank. Also, look for content; search engines like to see original content so if your link is on a page with text on it then it will be viewed in higher regard compared to a site with nothing but a list of links.

Directories

Submitting your website to different directories is probably the easiest and most common way to get links to your website. Most directories are either free directories, paid directories or reciprocal directories or any combination of these. Any of these can be quality directories so deciding where to submit to is up to what kind of campaign you are doing and how many quality links you are trying to get.

One thing to look for when submitting to directories, other than what I described above, is whether the directory is a general directory or a niche directory. General directories are much easier to find and there are thousands of them out there; however, because they are so general, your link will not be heavily weighted from a general directory compared to a niche directory. Niche directories are specifically about one topic, or a small amount of topics. Because these directories are so focused, if your content matches the topics of one of these directories then your link will be weighted higher.

Link Exchange Programs

Link exchange programs are usually fairly easy to find; whether it be through a mass exchange program between a lot of different companies and websites or just one of your business’ clients or other local businesses that you can exchange each other’s links. You can usually find a lot of link exchange requests in forums. These links are considered reciprocal links which are not bad for your website but they don’t really do a whole lot so I would only recommend spending time exchanging links with companies that are related content to your website.

Article writing

Writing articles is probably one of the best but most time-consuming way to get links. Google and other search engines really like to see unique content and when you write an article that consists of a lot of unique and original content, the search engines give a lot of weight to links attached to these. There are a lot of article directories out there that you can submit articles to and these will usually bring you pretty good article placement and traffic depending on the quality of your article. Again, the more your article is related to the content on your website, the high weight the search engine will attribute to that link. Unfortunately, this is a somewhat time consuming process because you are really only getting one link per article (articles are usually a few hundred words or more).

Blog Comments

Leaving comments on other peoples blogs is a great way to get links and traffic, especially if their blog uses the “do-follow” attribute. Please make sure that when you are commenting on other people’s blogs, that you are providing some useful information or a useful comment because no one likes a spammer. They are providing you with an opportunity to generate links and traffic so the least you can do is have something useful to say. Besides, a lot of do-follow blogs usually moderate comments, so if you have a pointless post or it’s just an obvious link-drop then the moderator will probably just deny your comment and you just wasted your time.

Signature links

Signature links are usually specific to forums, chat rooms and emails. This is where you set a signature in your profile with you link in it; every time you make a post or send an email it attaches your link to the bottom of your post. With emails, the link does not help you with search engines but it can potentially increase traffic to your website. With forums however, your signature links are seen by search engines and do count as a link to your website. Forums are a great way to communicate with other people in your industry and it is a great place to ask and answer questions while getting a free link every time you make a post. Keep in mind, just like with any other links, the more the forum topics relate to your website’s content, the more value your signature links will be given by the search engines.

Social Media Networks

Social media has exploded with popularity on the internet within the past few years and while the topic of social media can be saved for another article, you can build links through social media networks. Most social media networks like MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. usually allow you to add a company website to your profile. These links are usually weighted pretty high by Google and other search engines, which makes it well worth doing but don’t expect to get a lot of links this way.

What is PageRank?

PageRank is one of the important factors that determine Search Engine Results Page (SERP). It is a numerical value assigned by Google that shows the importance of a web page. When one page links to another, it is actually casting a vote for the other page. It goes to say that a page with more relevant inbound links enjoys a higher page rank. For simplicity sake, PageRank is referred to PR in this article.

Applying the Mathematical Concept of PageRank

Google calculates the PR of a web page using this equation:

PR(A)=(1-d) + d[PR(t1)/C(t1) +...+ PR(tn)/C(tn)]

‘t1…tn’ are pages linking to Page A

‘C’ is the number of outbound links of the linking page

‘d’ is a damping factor set at 0.85

This is the original equation Google published when it developed PR. Whether Google uses a variation of it, only God knows. This equation, though, is essential to an understanding of PR.

Don’t be scared by the above equation. For a fuller explanation of this equation with working examples read The Google Page Rank Algorithm and How it Works by Ian Rogers.

The purpose of this present article is to apply the Mathematical concept of PR to your web page ranking strategy. Yes, you can organize your linking strategy to achieve high PR for your important web pages.

Inbound Linking Strategy

Many people assume that the Toolbar PR values of PR1 to PR10 are set on a logarithmic scale. Nobody outside Google knows for sure, but there is a very good reason for this assumption. That being the case, moving from a lower page rank to the next higher one gets increasingly difficult. So, moving from PR3 to PR4 is more difficult compared to moving from PR1 to PR2. For illustration refer to the table below…

Toolbar PageRank (log base 10….Real PageRank

0……………………………..0 - 10

1……………………………100 - 1,000

2………………………….1,000 - 10,000

3…………………………10,000 - 100,000

4……………………………and so on…

*This illustration assumes a log base of 10.

In a nutshell, an inbound page link with a PR8 is worth more than one with PR4. The number of outbound links of the incoming page link becomes immaterial. Inbound links with high PRs that are relevant to your website will boost your web page ranking significantly.

The practice in the past was to buy inbound links with high PR to boost your web page PR. However, Google in recent times has clamped down this practice. A new web page with lots of high PR inbound links will be viewed with suspicion. Buying incoming links has become a thing of the past. The rock solid ways to gather inbound links are through…

a. Directories - Getting listed in quality directories like DMOZ or Yahoo can help boost your page rank.

b. Building a great content site that others want to link with.

Internal Linking Strategy

Based on the equation that Google uses to calculate PR, adding new pages has the effect of improving the overall PR of a website. If your organize your internal links carefully, you can channel the PR of your new pages to the important pages of your website.

The strategy is to grow your website steadily by adding new pages, and link them to your important pages. Avoid pages that are identical eg. affiliate programs web pages. You will be accused of spamming by Google, and run the risk of having your web pages and possibly your entire website penalized. Add new pages that are rich in content, and relevant to your website. Content is king.

However, new pages have to be indexed by Google before they can channel their PR to other pages. Google only indexes pages that have one or more pages on the web linked to them. Organize your internal linking carefully.

Outbound Linking Strategy

You will lose page rank with outbound links. So it is good practice to ask for reciprocal links, and to have outbound links from a page with the lowest PR. Have the anchor text of the incoming links centered on your keywords or similar keywords. You also need to vary the text of your inbound links to make them look natural to Google.

Choose your link exchange partners carefully. Avoid link farms. Period.

Google enjoys about 36 percent of web traffic on the World Wide Web. In absolute terms, this represents a significant figure. As long as PR is one of the important factors Google uses to determine Search Engine Result Pages, it is prudence to understand how PR works and strategize your linking accordingly. You don’t need to crack your head to fully understand PR. All you need is to simply apply the practical concepts delineated in this article to your linking strategy, and a good dose of patience. For Google places emphasis on the age of your links, your domain, and your web pages.

It’s a fool’s game to try to beat Google. Stick to rock solid principles when building your link structure, and you won’t have to worry when the next Google ‘dance’ comes along. Your web pages will still be standing after the dust has settled.

Getting other sites to link to your website has been at the core of website search engine optimisation since shortly after Google launched, more than ten years ago. However, in an age when everything happens so quickly it seems an oxymoron that a core web activity seems to take so long to achieve results.

When building a fully functional online store selling hundreds of thousands of products takes just a few days work, why should it take months of continued effort to rise to the top of the search results?

The answer is that Google are trying to make the rankings a true reflection of relative importance. If this were not so, then we would have a system whereby any major multinational could throw millions into an SEO budget and guarantee top placement. We should be thankful that the search engine providers are helping to keep the web a more-or-less level playing field for businesses.

The temptation we all have as web marketing professionals is to look for automation and short cuts at every opportunity. If someone promises to sell us the software that automatically generates a million free backlinks we instinctively grasp for this, knowing that manually getting hold of a million backlinks would be a lifetime’s work.

Of course, the reality of such software opportunities is never realised. In fact my first piece of advice is to ditch automated link building tools altogether. They are too easily replicable by your competitors to be of real value. In addition in most cases they fail to generate ‘good’ links.

They also manage to annoy webmasters with their poorly written automated emails. This is important because a good backlink is only likely to be given if the person at the other end likes you. They are unlikely to like you if you send them emails that they perceive as spam.

So, how do you get a link?

Find a site that you want to link to you. Now think seriously about why the human being who receives your request for a link should comply.

Think about the benefits to his or her visitors, the close fit between your two sites. The fact that you are not in direct competition and the free link that you are going to give in return. In your email mention all these things in detail. Be honest about exactly which page you want the link on and the page where your reciprocal link will appear. You might also tell the prospective partner about traffic levels, Page Rank and future plans for your site.

If you don’t think this is enough of an inducement for them then don’t send the email yet. Before you do send it why not up your offer? You could offer to write a brand new article for their site. Most web owners love unique new content so this has real value for them. If you own more than one site, offer 2 links in return for one. In short, put yourself in their position and answer all the questions they might have regarding whether to coply with your link request.

Once you have got the offer right, look carefully at the copy. Proof read it again and again. Spelling mistakes and grammatical howlers speak of unprofessional, uncaring attitudes. In addition, remove cultural references that may not be appropriate. For example, most British webmasters will junk any link request emails they receive that mention God, Jesus or any other deity. The British simply do not include messages of devotion in business emails and will react badly to emails that do include them.

Trawl your own inbox and look at emails that you responded to. Think about the words they used and the ideas that these formed in your mind. By really thinking hard about the emails we send out we can achieve great results and get lots of good quality links.

White hat SEO (or ethical SEO if you like) is often argued to be not as successful as ‘black hat’ SEO. Proponents of black hat optimisation have even gone so far as saying that using black hat they can easily out rank any white hat SEO’d site.

Whilst it may be true that Black Hat techniques certainly can have a more rapid and dramatic effect on raising the Google ranking of a site, this has to be weighed against the fact that if discovered the site may well be penalised, or banned altogether.

This is not even considering any moral issues with black hat SEO. Even if the shady SEO techniques used are not detectable by Google at present, some black hatters seem to take that to mean that they can get away with dodgy dealings…

This argument is flawed! Sooner or later the chances are that Google will detect their exploits, and act accordingly. Recently for example, Google decided to try to target people that are selling links for the purpose of manipulating PageRank for their clients. Many people have since lost their own PageRank because of this.

Link selling is often considered grey hat by many, so imagine what would happen to a site that got caught committing what Google would consider real black hat! (Such as cloaked pages etc)

Even if white hat SEO techniques may take longer to have an effect, long term ethical SEO is the best option for most sites. Positions gained through ethical SEO are more likely to be maintained for longer, and bring you better quality traffic. - But that’s just my opinion as a white hatter.

Did you know that between 85% to 90% of all traffic going to websites comes from search engines and that vast majority of those searches comes from only 3. These major search engines have dominated the internet search industry for more than 10 years; They are Google, Microsoft LIVE Search and Yahoo.

For your website to be indexed correctly by these search engines, you need to put in some work. Besides just submitting your websites address to search engines, you need to help them better understand your internal linking structure by including a Sitemap.xml. A Simemap.xml is basically a document that contains links all the pages of your website, giving a priority to each page and how often that page is updated. You also want to include a Sitemap.html page which is what a human will see and gives a basic presentation of the main pages of the website.

To save time on creating a Sitemap.xml and Sitemap.html, visit http://www.xml-sitemaps.com and input your websites address and within less than a minute you will have your Sitemap created. You need to then upload the files to your web server. Then let the search engines know the Sitemap is there by using the following:

Google Webmasters

Yahoo Site Explorer

Live Search Webmaster Central

Create a FREE account, then add the sitemap…Thats it!
Just make sure when ever you add more pages to your website to updated your Sitemap. Also when you log into your Google Webmasters account you can check how many pages have been indexed and if there are any errors with the Sitemap.
